| Album: Sustenance The Egyptian queen or royal daughter may have been regarded as the natural mediator between her people's need for a good harvest and the divinity who could bring it. This princess is the first royal woman depicted shaking a sistrum, the cultic musical instrument usually associated with Hathor but in fact used more widely. (B. Lesko, 1999,100 and 146). Scholars have suggested that the prominence of princesses in temple scenes (and the lack of princes' portrayals) and also the lack of documentation of marriages for 18th dynasty princesses, suggests their dedication to religious roles and their importance for the continued fertility of the land of Egypt.
