The birds labeled as Southern spicifer are in fact from the region imm below the Shan states. The coppery Uthai morphotype inhabits a region between the Salween and Mekong rivers. The "southern spicifer" may be of the same lineage as the Kumon whose range extends into Tibet and Mishmi. The Arakan morphotype is isolated not by geographic boundaries but rather by ecotype. It appears to be adapted to submontane habitat. The Yangon morphotype familar to any of us that are familiar with Wolfgang's green peafowl conservation project site. His spicifer is of the Yangon morphotype intermediate between Arakan and Shan morphotypes. I've just learned that the second most southern population of peafowl on the isthmus are of the Shan morphotype. They may have had a range that extended into Malaysia if theirs is anything similar to the crawfurd's kalij of the same region.
The population of peafowl in the southern most tip of Thailand are of the extraordinarly coloured siamese imperator- perhaps the term imperator is inappopropriate for them.
They are clearly in contrast with the Shan form. The differences in their respective habitat preferences - in perspective, the crested fireback and crawfurd's kalij appear to be inhabiting the same narrow wildlife corridor-the peninsula true to form is ever in the act of dissolving into the ocean.
High spined ridges and infrequent yet common enough volcanic events blanket the region in ash- the mountains become cool and arid as a consequence and the water table falls.
The crested fireback and its lowland forest congener the vivid hued green peafowl morphotype whose recent ancestors witnessed a huge mountain wall that bridged Vietnam to the Pahang collapse into the ocean under the pressure of the Holocene global warming when the great ice sheets and glaciers melted. That vividly hued morphotype is still found in southern most Thailand though likely extirpated from southern western Vietnam. |
